AI Chatbot Development for Pearson, 30% Lead Conversion

Pearson India sells across seven product lines, from PTE Academic to school curriculum books, and every one of them was generating the same first question from a visitor: which product is right for me. ibs Fulcro built Learna, a chatbot on Amazon Lex, to answer that question on the website and on Facebook Messenger, qualify the visitor, and pass a contact to the sales team.

At a glance

Client: Pearson India (Education)

Problem: Seven product lines and a large test-preparation catalogue meant most website visitors could not find the right product without emailing or calling, and the sales team had no way to qualify them at scale.

Solution: Learna, a chatbot on Amazon Lex and AWS Lambda serving web chat and Facebook Messenger from one build, with free-text understanding, a guided fallback, product lookup with buy links, and contact capture.

Result: 118 qualified leads and 35 enrolments in one quarter, a 30% conversion rate, with Rs 3,80,972 in attributed revenue.

ibs Fulcro's role: Conversation design, AI chatbot development, AWS architecture, deployment and quarterly performance reporting.

The Problem

Pearson India's catalogue is wide. PTE Academic test preparation, school curriculum programmes such as MyPedia and Pearson Classroom, the MePro English programme, MyInsights, professional programmes, and a book list that runs from IIT Foundation Physics for class 7 to Civil Services General Studies. A visitor arriving from a Facebook ad for PTE and a visitor looking for a CLAT workbook land on the same site with very different needs.

The existing route was a contact form or a phone call. That put the load on a sales team that had to answer the same qualifying questions repeatedly, and it lost every visitor who was not ready to fill a form. The brief was to answer the first question, which product is right for me, inside the visit, and to capture a contact only once the visitor had a reason to give one.

What Learna Does

Learna opens with a plain statement that it is a bot and what it can help with. A visitor can type freely ("books on test preparation, CAT") and Learna extracts the segment, category and subject in one pass, then returns the matching title with its ISBN, price and a link to buy. Where the visitor prefers to be led, Learna offers tappable options at each step: segment, then category, then subject. When a product line needs a human, Learna asks for an email or phone number and hands the conversation to Pearson's sales team with the product interest already recorded.

The bot was deployed on the Pearson India website and on Facebook Messenger from the same build, so a visitor from a paid social campaign and a visitor from Google search reach the same logic and the same product store.

Three Ways a Conversation Can Run

ModeHow it works
Free-text NLP flowThe user types what they want. Amazon Lex resolves the intent and asks only for the slots it is missing, one at a time, until it can look up the product.
Simultaneous slot detectionWhen a single message already contains segment, category and subject, Learna fills all three slots at once and skips straight to the product result.
Interactive text response (ITRS)When free text fails or the user asks to be guided, Learna presents tappable choices at each level. No dead ends: every failed understanding routes into this mode.

Why the guided fallback matters more than the NLP: a bot that only understands free text fails silently and the visitor leaves. Routing every misunderstanding into a menu means the visitor still reaches a product, and the failed phrase is logged as a training example for the next release. The fallback is what makes the free-text mode safe to ship.

The Architecture

ComponentRole
Amazon LexSpeech recognition and natural language understanding; holds the intents, utterances and slots
Request processor on AWS LambdaFulfils each intent: queries the product store, formats the reply, records the contact
Chat service behind API GatewayControls the session and manages input and output for every channel
Back-office controller with user and product storeWhere Pearson's team maintains the catalogue and reviews captured contacts
Chat session storePersists every conversation for reporting and for the failed-conversation review
Amazon PollyText to speech, so the same bot can serve a call-centre voice channel
ChannelsWeb chat and Facebook Messenger, with voice provisioned, all inside one AWS VPC

The Results, January to March 2021

In the quarter, Learna handled 4,127 product conversations: 3,935 on the website and 192 on Messenger. PTE Academic was the largest line at 1,393 conversations, followed by Books at 1,134 and Pearson Classroom at 567. The bot captured 520 email addresses and 160 phone numbers. From those, Pearson's sales team qualified 118 leads and enrolled 35, a 30% conversion rate, with Rs 3,80,972 in revenue attributed to the bot for the quarter.

Traffic into the bot came mainly from Facebook (2,382 conversations tagged to Facebook campaigns), Google Search (727, plus 254 from remarketing lists and 195 from dynamic search ads), and education portals including Inshorts, CollegeDunia and Shiksha. That the bot sat at the end of every paid channel is what made the revenue attributable.

30%
Lead to enrolment conversion, 35 of 118 qualified leads

Why conversion is the number to hold the bot to. Conversation counts and contacts captured are activity. A chatbot that hands the sales team 118 leads of which 35 enrol has done a qualification job the contact form never did, and the Rs 3,80,972 attached to those enrolments is what pays for the build.

The Numbers We Would Rather Publish Than Hide

Across the quarter the session store logged 16,798 sessions. 13,043 were abandoned, meaning the widget was opened and closed without a real exchange. Of the 3,755 that became conversations, Learna answered 2,569 to completion and 1,186 hit a question the knowledge base did not yet hold. That is a 69% completion rate on real conversations. Of 679 users who answered "was this helpful", 366 said yes and 312 said no.

The failed conversations split two ways. Some were questions no product bot should answer. The rest were opportunities: recurring questions that became new FAQs in the knowledge base. Reviewing that list monthly is the maintenance model, and it is why the completion rate is a number that moves rather than a number that is claimed.

Why This Matters Beyond One Client

Any business with a large catalogue and one recurring question at the top of the funnel has the same problem Pearson had. The pattern that worked here is transferable: put the product data in a store the bot can query, let free text run first, route every failure into a guided menu, capture the contact only where a human is needed, and report the bot on conversion and revenue rather than on message counts. The same build now serves as the reference architecture for the AI chatbot development work ibs Fulcro does today, with large language models replacing the intent model where the catalogue is too wide to script.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Learna is a conversational chatbot ibs Fulcro built for Pearson India. It runs on the Pearson India website and on Facebook Messenger, helps a visitor find the right Pearson product across seven product lines, answers common questions, and captures an email or phone number for the sales team to follow up.

In the January to March 2021 quarter Learna handled 4,127 product conversations (3,935 on the website and 192 on Messenger), captured 520 email addresses and 160 phone numbers, and generated 118 qualified leads, of which 35 enrolled. That is a 30% lead to enrolment conversion rate and Rs 3,80,972 in attributed revenue for the quarter.

Amazon Lex for speech recognition and natural language understanding, AWS Lambda for request processing, Amazon Polly for text to speech, API Gateway in front of a chat service that manages sessions and input and output, a back-office controller with a user and product store, and a chat session store. All of it sits inside an AWS VPC and serves web chat and Facebook Messenger from one build.

It does not pretend. Learna tells the user it could not understand, then offers a guided path: pick a segment, then a category, then a subject, from tappable options. This interactive text response mode gets the user to the right product even when free text fails, and every failed free-text turn is logged so the knowledge base can be extended.

Because those are the measured numbers. Of 3,755 conversations that reached a real exchange, Learna answered 2,569 to completion and 1,186 needed an answer the knowledge base did not yet hold. Of 679 users who rated an answer, 366 said it helped. Publishing both figures is how the bot gets improved: the failed conversations are the backlog for the next release.

Yes. The same architecture, Amazon Lex with a product store and a guided fallback, applies to any business with a large catalogue and a repeat question about which product fits. Get in touch to discuss your product data, channels and the outcome you want the bot measured on.
